Molecular electronics is an entirely new platform that uses thin, nanoscale layers of molecules as circuit components. Due to the unique features of the molecules and the way in which electrons move across these materials at the nanoscale, molecular devices have unique electronic functions. Currently, we are making use of these unique electronic properties to create really cool distorted sounds in audio clipping circuits (also known as overdrive pedals!). Here is a nanoscopic cartoon of a molecular junction (left, top), along with a macroscale photo of a wafer that contains many molecular junction chips (left, bottom). These will be packaged into SIM-card holders (right, top) and TO cans (right, bottom).
